Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders (TMD) are becoming increasingly common in modern times and can be, at best, annoying and uncomfortable and, at worst, extraordinarily painful. Given that this joint is involved in eating, talking, and swallowing, little thought is often given to the other joints of our body. When you begin to experience problems with the TMJ, one or many factors may have contributed to it. For example;

  • Trauma
  • Degeneration
  • Dietary issues
  • Tongue tie
  • Teeth clenching or grinding
  • Poor chewing patterns
  • Incorrect tongue positioning
  • Non-nutritive habits

Working with the TMD often involves more than one health practitioner, and I will work on the mouth and muscle function needed for efficient eating, swallowing and talking. We ensure the tongue is elevated to the roof of the mouth, meaning the lower jaw moves forward and sits correctly in its socket, meaning that any signs and symptoms treated by bodyworkers/GPs/Dentists can work effectively.  It’s a team approach working for you and your body. So, if you experience any of the following, call me.

  • Pain, discomfort, tension or stiffness in the TMJ or face
  • Difficult eating, talking or swallowing
  • Clenching or grinding of the teeth
  • Worn down teeth
  • Grating, popping, clicking or locking of the jaw
  • Headaches, toothaches or dizziness that has no other medical or dental diagnosis.
